SEATTLE – Drivers and boaters needing to renew or register their licenses should plan on interruptions in early July as the Department of Licensing updates its systems. The failures will particularly affect those who have to put things in order before Independence Day weekend.

While the systems are offline, virtually all online and personal services are unavailable.

Here are the most important dates to keep in mind:

  • Online vehicle and ship services, including license renewals, will be suspended from Thursday, July 1 through Monday, July 5, at midnight.
  • The driver, vehicle and ship-related online services will be discontinued from Saturday, July 3rd to Monday, July 5th, at 2:00 p.m. Vehicle registration offices remains closed to personal business during this time.
  • Driver’s license is closed from Saturday 3rd July to Monday 5th July.

All online and face-to-face operations will resume as usual on Tuesday, July 6th.

For those applying for vehicle and marine licenses well in advance of the holidays, officials recommend trying online before the scheduled outages. For boaters, all ship registrations and stickers must be renewed before June 30th. Personal visits to the driver’s license offices still require an appointment, which can take weeks due to high demand.
